I rarely wade into these discussions because I only feel strongly about two performances of individual tunes as "THE" best ever:

Attics of My Life 6/24/70- If anyone out there thinks they have better one please post. No latter day versions need apply; their voices were simply too shot by the late 80s, and unlike many Dead songs the vocals are critical here.

Morning Dew 5/8/77- I'm not going to ask for dissenters on this one because I know there will be plenty. And for the record I don't think Cornell is even the best show of May '77, much less all time. But I have stated before that I think this "Dew" is that rarest of animals: a primal era Dead song whose peak performance came after the 1975 hiatus.

True. 5-20-84. Although the monsters from 1977 are all spectacular.

there are GD versions of Sugaree which are perfectly fine, even stellar, but i've yet to hear a GD Sugaree that matches the best JGB could offer, even sometimes on an off nite; and so, to answer your query: true

The finest Sugaree for all romantics was played by my HS DEAD cover band friends? Yep--first dance I ever danced with my future wife was at that party. They actually played it for "us".

Do you realize how long I've been "doing this" kind of thing?

I like your approach.

Best version of Franklins Tower was the one my little college band played in our first live performance. On the tape I heard later we sounded like crap, but during the show it was absolute perfection. I'm going with the memory, not the physical evidence.

It's way too early for a resurfacing of The Maykers. For the new folks, there was some hearty debate revolving around this fine band last year. Leave it to say that most of it was less than complimentary.

Please, stop the madness before we are sucked in again.

Unless, of course, being sucked in sounds like fun.

hahahah

Best St Stephen

Me and my 4 high school pals belting out St St with one acoustic and one electric (for the leads) at our annual HS variety show.

I know we must have sounded horrendous given or innate inability to harmonize - nothing like 5 dudes monotone vocals

At least we drank a large jug of bottom shelf white wine before taking the stage. May have been Old Duke, it was definitely less than $5 for a gallon.

We usually depended on copious amounts of Rolling Rock (dirt cheap at the time). I'm thinking a few bottles of Buckfast would have been a better choice.

I note that the Centers for Disease Control define a 'regular drinker' as someone who has had 12 drinks in the last year.

I guess that makes me either Warp Factor 10 or Def Con 1 on the CDC scale, maybe both...

I knew any alchohol reference would bring you out.

As the wikipedia article states: "...Buckfast is alleged to be the drink of choice for drinkers who are prone to committing anti-social behaviour when drunk"

It's only missing a reference to unnatural behaviour towards sheep.

Note the 'alleged'. I'm off the hook because I'm just plain antisocial ALL the time.

Absolutely! I picture you as a Happy Drunk--one that never has an unkind word to say while so enjoying their favorite past-time...why muck up a good buzz with ranting and raving at those that deserve it, I always sez...there will be plenty of time to set one and all straight once the hang-over kicks in, and more appropriate facial expressions to fit the circumstances I find.

not false but my "first" sugaree was from 6-8-77 played by d gans on the dead hour back in'89. it still does it for me. lately i've been into sugs from 6-22-74 and 12-19-73. one of jerry and hunters strongest compositions.

Nice mention of 11/2/79. The Miss Half-step > Franklin's is my all-time favorite.

I am quite partial as this was my Second Dead show.
